They take items purely on a donation basis, and often give store proceeds to an associated nonprofit program or association. They accept most types of items, barring a few that pose a hazard to public health such as used mattresses. Because they need to move a large volume of stuff quickly, they price items low to the benefit of everyone. However, they can only do minimal checks on product quality and also rarely, if ever, offer return policies. This is because the expectation is that you as the consumer will be willing to take on some small risk for items that might be chipped, damaged, or nonfunctional in exchange for low prices.
Thrift stores also can offer lower prices because they often rely on volunteers and grants, which takes pressure off of needing to reach a higher amount of revenue to sustain operations.
One challenge of some thrift stores is that they can be less accessible. Some stores have multiple floors with winding staircases and narrow, cluttered aisles. Others have very limited hours that can be hard to make if you work a 9-5, Monday-Friday job. A particular challenge with thrift stores in Pittsburgh is that our favorite locations are generally far away from convenient lines of public transport. So if you do not have a car, it can be really hard to reach thrift stores with the best selections and deals.
